Well...here's one for you. The "Civil War" wasn't a civil war. Definition: noun "a war between political factions or regions within the same country." Since the Confederate states seceded, it was not a war between between factions or regions within the same country. Unless you don't believe they were, actually, a separate country. The reason for secession was slavery. Abraham Lincoln had promised to end slavery. When he was elected in 1860, that was the last straw. It was not taxes and to say it was "state's rights" is disingenuous. The "state's right" they are talking about is SLAVERY! It wasn't the state's right to issue driver's licenses or regulate topless beaches! It was SLAVERY. The reason for the WAR was the United States did not recognize the legal right of the Confederate states to secede and invaded the south to force them to return to the Union. Hence the terms in the south "The War Between the States" or "The War of Northern Aggression" The Southern states were dominated by Democrats, and it WAS Democrats who supported slavery, segregation, and filibustered the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. As the south became less segregated, and less racist, it also became less Democrat. In 1980 the "solid south" flipped for the Republicans in the landslide Ronald Reagan victory and never came back.
