  1. I was a police officer for 36 years. Retired in 2009. I was shot twice in 36 years. Once in the leg with a 5.56 round and once in the chest with a 9mm. The shot in the chest was stopped by my vest. I had a huge bruise right next to my left nipple and it hurt like HELL. No broken ribs. I was badly bruised and very very sore, but alive. They kept me in the hospital overnight for observation and the nurses showed me where the ice cream stash was.😜 I (and the doctors) believe that would have been a fatal wound without the vest. The worst wound, in terms of recovery, was the rifle round in the leg. Desk duty for 14 months after that! Being shot is guaranteed to ruin your day, even if a vest stops the round. We did not have soft or lightweight body armor to wear for every day use in 1973. The only armor we had at that time was heavy, plate armor. It was used in especially dangerous situations, but not as everyday wear. By the time I was shot in the chest in 1993 it was standard issue for everyday wear by all officers. Glad for that. The armor now is even better. My advice...don't get shot.
