The solution to this is for the government to GET OUT of student loans entirely and allow/require the colleges and universities to offer/underwrite the loans. The educational institutions should provide financing to access their own product, the way auto manufacturers do...AND make a profit from the interest on the money THEY risk. If the educational institutions want to take the risk of $100,000+ loans to unemployed 18 year olds, let them. Leave the taxpayers OUT.

@jamie7664 It's not jealousy. It's a natural reaction to being FORCED to pay for someone else's commitment. People sign contracts agreeing to repay loans and then they don't...then the government confiscates money from the people who earned it and uses their money to pay for the loans someone else promised to pay. That is fundamentally unfair. I have nothing to be "jealous" about. I have a graduate degree and never incurred a penny in loans. I worked at the university hospital and received my tuition as a benefit of my full time job, and went to school at the same time. Then I received a full academic scholarship with a stipend for my masters degree. No loans, very little cash out of pocket. It was also done in violation of the US Constitution. The President cannot spend money not appropriated by Congress. Pelosi was right the first time. This cannot be done without legislation.

@shaneestle9273 NONE of those things were implemented by Presidential fiat. They were implemented by the Congress through legislation. An y changes to those things require additional legislation. By people we get to vote for every TWO YEARS.

@jamie7664 No, not outraged. You really don't understand, do you? The PPP program was approved by Congress with legislation and forgiveness was part of the legislation IF employers used the fund for employee salaries. The PPP funds went to EMPLOYEES regardless of how large the employer was. Why should EMPLOYEES of a large business be denied the benefits any more than the EMPLOYEES of a small business? Do you hate EMPLOYEES that work for large corporations? Employees who were working were not eligible to receive unemployment...which costs the government MORE than the PPP. It was good business. I learned that with the math I took for the engineering degree I obtained without a loan. This college loan debt "forgiveness" is being done by Executive fiat with NO enabling legislation from a Congress we get to vote for every 2 years. Whether I "like" a piece of LEGISLATION, or not, is irrelevant. If it is passed by Congress, it is following the way our country is sup[posed to work...and that isn't always going to be to my liking. That's life. I can vote for, or against, MY Representative in November evert two years. This is an unconstitutional Executive Order with no enabling legislation. It will very likely be blocked in Federal court, as it should be. And as the non-legislative initiatives of the Covid response were (Vaccine mandates on non-government employees and rent moratoriums)

@bobshanery5152 Correct. And/or spend hours and hours and hours filling out scholarship applications after 12 years of incentivizing good grades and learning so they can get a FREE college education without FORCING other people to pay for it. M y 3 children had fully paid educations 1 with a bachelors degree, 1 with a masters and 1 with a doctorate without 1 penny in student loans through scholarships and WORK.

@spinfrost There are many ways to pay for a college education besides agreeing to loans and then having the government FORCE other people to bail you out by confiscating their earnings. If "our future" depends on people who take that route, we're doomed. If you are too stupid to find the ways to fund a college education, you probably shouldn't be going to college.

@michaelbell9103 What difference does that make?!?!??!

@Genuinely_Holloway I paid cash for the house I live in now in 2015. 🙄 How about scholarships? How about work/study? How about employment that offers college tuition as a benefit? How about your parents taking out a HELOC against their home and paying for your college? How about joining the military and letting the GI Bill pay for your education after you serve 4 years or even going to college while in the military? OR How about this brilliant idea...getting a degree that results in a GOOD PAYING job so you can PAY BACK the loans you took. WOW! What a concept !!!!!!!! You'll notice that this abomination of an Executive Order cuts benefits at $125,000 income. So, you know, the Engineers, doctors, lawyers, IT Engineers, MBAs they don't need help paying off their loans. Coincidence? What kind of LOSER would someone have to be to think the only way to get a college education is to take out loans for worthless degrees, NOT pay the loans, and FORCE other people to pay for your education?!?!?! Can you tell me?

@peggymurphy7917 Thank you. That wasn't an option for me because my parents didn't have that kind of money. Ironically, I didn't even want to go to college. I wanted to be a police officer (and was for 36 years) but my HS educated father and mother insisted I go to college since I couldn't be a police officer until age 21. "You might as well go to college while you wait to be 21" oh, and...you will pay for it. 🤣 As it turned out, my college degree and acquired (through education) language skills ended up being a great asset in my LE career and opened up opportunities in that line of work that I never even imagined. Who knew? It was not an option for my kids because I told them they would have to earn it/pay for it themselves. I did it...so could they. It wasn't easy for me, but no one told me it was supposed to me easy. I will tell you that applying for scholarships is the best part time job you will ever have and I DID spend hours and hours with each of my three sons searching for and applying for scholarships. But they did it with me. That said...It's fine with me if other kids' Moms and Dads pay for their college. Just leave me out of it. Taxpayers shouldn't have to do it. I believe that debt is dumb and college debt is dumb enough that it should disqualify a person from college entry, IMO.

@ravenoffire87 I did not see any mention of taxin g the "forgiven" amount. Even if it is taxable, a person would only have to pay the tax on the amount counted "forgiven". I think you are confusing this with taxes on loans which are "defaulted", which is a way to "punish" people for defaulting on loans. Since there is no default. The Government, who controls bankruptcy laws, is never going to allow people to discharge money owed to the government in bankruptcy. You sound like you got a useful degree and a good job and are doing what responsible people do. Good for you!

@ravenoffire87 So NO ONE anywhere offers entry level accounting jobs? How is that even possible? 🤣

@user-qj7dy2xj5c It doesn't matter how much you make and how much they make. "They" made a commitment to pay a loan which they used as an investment in their future. It is their responsibility to pay for it.

I think this is part of the reason he extended the moratorium on payments until January 1. I think he knows this will be blocked by a Federal Judge fairly quickly. When it's blocked by, no doubt, a Trump appointed judge, Biden will say "I tried, but TRUMP"
