  1. During the Vietnam war it was common to offer non-violent offenders the choice of jail or enlisting in the military. I knew a guy in high school that joined the Marines in lieu of serving jail time for car theft. This was also when the Marines did not require a high school diploma. You only had to be 17 years old.
