"Russia is raising taxes to pay for the war" That's your headline. Russian people won't like it and Putin will lose support for the war because of it. No need to make claims about any other countries, including the US. There really is no reason to risk your credibility by saying things that are completely irrelevant to the topic. The US implemented an income tax (which didn't exist at the time) during the civil war. The tax was rescinded after the war. Our current income tax was implemented in 1913 and tax brackets were raised during WW1, though they may not have been directly attributed to the war, per se. Taxes were raised during the Vietnam war, and it was attributed to the war. The wage/price freeze of 1971 was directly attributed to inflation caused by the costs of the Vietnam war...though it wasn't so stated. It is extremely unpalatable for politicians to attribute a tax increase to a war. Politically STUPID, actually. But to assume that means the US "has never raised taxes due to a war" is simply naïve. That politicians SAY it is for some other reason, doesn't make it so.
