  1. I only first experienced the clapping the first time I flew into what was then the USSR (Kiev, Ukraine SSR in 1979). When everyone broke out clapping I thought..."Wait, is it unusual to land safely?" I'm 70 years old, first flew in the USA when I was 12 and never experienced people applauding when landing. I do not recall it being a "thing" in the USA. That said...I think it is courteous to show the pilots and crew you appreciate their skills and always said "thank you for a safe flight" to the crew when exiting.
