  1. I live in central, east coast Florida and coral snakes are not a "rare sight". In fact they are more common that I care for and the most common venomous snake we see. The most common snake we see, by far, is the harmless southern black racer. It is true they are not aggressive...but it is not unusual to find them in the garden and flower beds around homes. I was cleaning dead leaves out of the base of a crepe myrtle in the back yard a couple days ago and dug a coral snake out of the leaf litter. It crawled away as fast as it could. I always wear heavy gloves when gardening.
