  1. Medicare parts A&B don't cover prescriptions at all. We pay for extra coverage (part D or an Advantage plan) for prescriptions. Most of these plans limit your annual drug benefit, after which the patient must pay for the drug until you reach your maximum out of pocket for the year from prescriptions. (called the "donut hole") AND they don't cover a lot of these new drugs at all. Most people on Medicare (age 65+) would not be able to afford these drugs. I am diabetic and on Medicare. It's like working a Rubik's cube to find medicines to control my A1c without exceeding my maximum annual benefit and falling into the "donut hole". I have finally found that combination. I'm not going to be changing anytime soon. As for private insurance, I can't comment, but I don't see this "breaking" the current Medicare system.
