Are you forgetting that President Carter did this in our country more than 40 years ago when they mandated thermostats be set no lower than 78 degrees? Spain didn't have to make it up. We showed them way in the late 70s.

@davidpearson1157 It was called "Global Warming" at the time, and if we didn't do it we would all drown from the melting glaciers in 20 years! He also reduced the national speed limit to 55 mph on ALL roads to save gasoline, set the maximum heat level to 68 degrees and banned the use of chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants and propellants in aerosol cans because they were "damaging the ozone and causing global warming" All by EPA orders which, we find out now, were unconstitutional.

@anniesshenanigans3815 We also had long gas lines in 1973 when OPEC wanted higher prices for oil. The gas lines disappeared after a couple months and gas prices went from 32 cents/gallon to 55 cents/gallon overnight...and the gas lines went away. That was during Nixon's administration. The 2nd gas shortage occurred in 1979 when Iran/Iraq were getting after each other and threatening supplies out of the Persian Gulf. A war between them broke out in 1980. Carter had imposed his restrictions in 1977. There was no gas shortage in 1977.

@RayfordRaySiegel Mostly, they didn't enforce the thermostat settings. Like other Democrat initiatives, it was just for show and so they could say they "did something". Do you think Democrats invented that with the "Inflation Reduction Act" ? The speed limits were enforced by police, of course. Driving 55 mph on the interstate felt like you were crawling. How did they do it? The usual. The Dept. of Transportation would cut off highway funds if states did not reduce their speed limits to 55 mph. Of course, it did nothing to reduce global warming, we didn't drown from the rising seas in 20 years. Do they expect us to believe that Democrats in the USA can reverse the effects of Global Climate change that has been happening for millions of years? 🤣 We elected Reagan in 1980 and he did away with all that nonsense. He also reduced inflation (much worse in 1980 than it is now) and gas prices with tax cuts and getting rid of Gov't, regulations. After having jumped to over $1.80/gallon during Carter's term, (from 55 cents!) by 1989 When Reagan left office it was under $1/ gallon again. About 85 cents/gallon as I recall. Reagan also re-flagged oil tankers coming out of the Persian Gulf with American flags and used US military warships to protect them, THAT ended the Iranian threat of cutting off oil from the Persian Gulf.
