@JohnJohn-zn8ib johnjohn, your most recent comment is spot-on. Yes, there was firestorm damage perhaps as far as 13km away. And lakes up to 40km (not miles) away no doubt got some damage. Please note that neither of those things mean what you said at first: "just about everything gone".

The "just about everything gone" phrase is true out only, like I said, a few hundred meters. Even then, the iconic A-bomb dome was only around 150m away from the epicenter, and it is still standing today (with lots of help).

My parents couldn't believe it when they were walking around that nice city 34 years ago, as they had been told by the media in 1945 that humans could never inhabit that spot of land again. No one really knew what would happen, but yes, Hiroshima is one of the nicest, greenest big cities in Japan today.
