They keep making it harder and harder for foeigners to get permenant visas, but want more and more short-term "technical trainees" from Indonesia and Vietnam. Of course with the steep drop in the value of the yen, many young SE Asians are having 2nd thots about coming to Japan. You are right that it is very safe, but there are still bad things that happen. Right now there are many bear attacks!
