  25. Very briefly and loosely, only as an indicator to channelize your thoughts, who could have done what to prevent a surge in COVID cases? Let us take e brief look. 1. Constitutional authorities could have taken Suo moto cognizance at various stages and ordered a) rescinding polls b) introduction of lockdown c) Cancelling religious congregations d) closure of cinema halls or whatever, if they felt (not as an afterthought) any actions that could have prevented the spread of COVID. 2. Central government could have postponed elections and introduced Governors’ rule in the states due for a change of legislature. (I am not sure how this is possible; may be the parliament could have done it) 3. The oppositions parties could have demanded postponement of elections and introduction of Governors’ rule in the states due for a change of legislature. (I am not sure how this is possible; may be the parliament could have done it) 4. The media could have started a Nationwide discussion on postponement of elections and cancellation of the Kumbh. They did not do it though these were well within their capability and responsibility. 5. The hospitals (hats off to them, they are doing yeomen service) could have foreseen the requirement of remdesivir and oxygen and placed orders accordingly well in advance (say two months back) in their normal supply chain. 6. PILs could have been initiated for all or any of the above and more… 7. So many people could have done so many different things….. But none of these happened. It is a pandemic, not an epidemic or common flu. Things that will move the needle the most—are things that past events give us little to no guide about, when a viral pandemic is mutating fast and tomorrow it may mutate faster than the speed of light (figuratively) and be able to travel in the air. Hopefully it will not come to that and humanity will survive this pandemic. There will be unprecedented events. Their unprecedented nature means we won’t be prepared for them, which is part of what makes them so impactful. The choice is between a rock and a hard place - lives or livelihoods; both are important and both if not saved case destruction. What is your choice? Tailpiece: Anybody can be wise in hindsight. We the people expect maturity, calmness responsible behaviour from the media and all other pillars of democracy.
