Open discussions on customs in societies is welcome and refreshing. Kudos to the Print. Hijab is something not mandated by religion, it is just a practice. So go half way…. There are such issues in the Vedic practices too. For instance the Vedas mandate only 7 rituals during a marriage ceremony. But many social dispensations in India do much more and term them as religious mandates. So I say Hijab is dispensable (as not part of religion). I am saying it because it is just a custom (not religious) in a community (discriminatory?) and not against Islam. I maintain that all religions were formed with good intentions. But religions have been exploited by unscrupulous elements from within. We have to recognise that first..before we point fingers at outsiders. Tailpiece: Customs are wrongly and willfully passed on as religious mandates by those within the religion, who want to exploit society.. This happens in ALL religions. Some fight, some succumb to the exploits. It is your choice where you want to be. Religion is much greater than a set of customs. ELSE why reservations?
