  1. Actually it was the Russians who backed Saddam. They provided massive military aid during the Iran-Iraq war. That's why the Iraqi military was armed with soviet weaponry. The US backed the Mujahedeen, who fought and lost against the Taliban when the Russians withdrew leaving Afghanistan a pile of rubble. Now the Russians are so desperate for influence in Afghanistan, they're making deals with the Taliban!
