Populism generally refers to populist movements who just tell you what you want to hear. We could all riot on the streets demanding increased spending and tax cuts. But ultimately someone has to play the grown up.

@BboyKeny Not so. Populism is the avoidance of unpalatable reality. Promising what is undeliverable. Offering simplistic answers to complicated problems.

@BboyKeny Not really. The tories were quite clear about the need for spending cuts. That is not populism.

@BboyKeny It is a very big policy, because it effects a lot of people's lives. But it is a policy aimed at seeing off a potentially worse situation (the country going bust). But whether it is right or whether it is wrong, it's not a populist policy - A populist policy would be to claim the country could instead increase spending while at the same time cutting taxation.
