For some reason, extras often find it hard to act like genuine members of the public. Give them a situation, and they more often than not act in a way they would if they were playing a role on the big screen. Almost as if they feel the need to create extra drama in an already dramatic situation. I believe this is because those who go into the extras business overcompensate because of the need to get noticed. Everything they are taught tells them to express their emotions thro their actions. But in real life, most people don't do that.
