EU Postal Service Directive. Opened up all postal services in the EU to competition. The RM warned this would be the result. As it is legally required to provide a full service to all areas of the UK, while its rivals are not. Which means that it has to operate in areas where it makes a loss rather than a profit. So it has to make up that loss somehow.

Good luck on getting that directive changed if you voted remain and got what you wanted.

From what I understand, Royal Mail was one of the few publically run services that was actually a success. But the RM isn't like TNT or DHL, neither of those have the responsibility for delivery of loss making parts of the mail sector. RM have obligations that those others do not, in order to provide a complete service to everyone. So the problem came about through opening up a service sector that in order for it to be a nationwide service, has to make a loss in certain areas. Where did that idea come from? We're talking the '1997 EU Postal Service Directive'. http://ec.europa.eu/growth/sectors/postal-services/legislation_en As Royal Mail warned at the time, competition from rivals could threaten the "fundamental economics" that support its six day a week letters delivery service. As the Royal Mail is legally required to deliver letters to the whole of the UK under its universal service obligation. While TNT and DHL are not. This has allowed those companies to "cherry pick" where to provide rival services. While leaving the RM with the loss making parts. I'm pretty much against publically run industry. But if it ain't broke. Don't fix it.
