That was simply virtue signalling aimed at non-Owen Joneses. Because Owen Jones himself will continue to encourage division, distrust, and hatred. He's hard left, after all.

Don't forget that Owen's idol, Jeremy Corbyn, campaigned against the EU for much of his 'career'. Even going so far as to claim the EU, along with the IMF and 'banks', were conspiring to increase unemployment and make everyone's lives worse off. Now, I'm certainly no fan of the EU. But I don't believe the EU is a nefarious globalist conspiracy. Not like Jeremy Corbyn. In fact, many of the more right wing Brexiteers basically repeat pretty much the same line as Corbyn and the hard left have always done when it comes to the EU. As for naming laws you want to repeal, thats not really the issue. The issue is who makes those laws and how can we change them? Its an issue of accountability. The EU cannot both be responsible for setting EU wide legislation and have no effect on our everyday lives. But that is essentially the argument you are making, am I right?

@pb1105 That is true, there is a great deal of difference between the conquest of India and being a member of the EU. Hyperbolic rhetoric is on both sides. And its unnecessary. But, the essential point is that if you can defend and respect the right of self governance in one case, you should recognise it for all. Populism is often a word used to describe any popular movement that one does not agree with. But populism tends to play on the idea that there are simple answers to complicated issues (religion/socialism/fascism/racial bigotry). And that is not the case with Brexit. Despite those like Owen Jones who explain away the reasons why people voted to leave the EU by claiming that they were voting against austerity/poverty/social injustice/inequality, or any number of other bandwagon issues Jones and his like regularly ride in order to promote their failed political ideology, it really is as simple as wanting to be able to hold those who govern you to account. To be able to know who is making your laws, and know how to remove them from power. The fact that many choose to ignore this simple explanation in favour of co-opting the referendum result to fit their own narrative of the poor, downtrodden and ignorant masses hitting out at any target they can in a fit of despair, is the reason why they can't understand the argument in favour of Brexit. After all, if you were to say one thing, and I decided to ignore you, and instead claim you were really saying something else, how could we have any kind of dialogue at all?

@pb1105 You should be more worried about the populism of the extreme left. After all, they have made a certain kind of racism acceptable again (I think u know what I mean). And have wholeheartedly supported political violence in the past. And are now running a mainstream political party. And Brexit is not responsible for the rise of hate crime. Because as we see, that is happening all across Europe.

@pb1105 You are unaware of the rise in anti-Semitism? In Germany Jews have recently been advised not to wear skullcaps in public. Even the Guardian reports anti-Semitism is at an all time high. Anti-Muslim hate crime is up all across Europe (you'd have to be blind not to notice). We can see the evidence of this by the formation of the German Pegida movement (particularly popular in the east of Germany), and, of course with the popularity of 'Tommy Robinson'. It would be difficult to link any of that to Brexit. Altho many have tried. But then you'd have the problem of explaining how and why the rise in hate crime in the UK follows the trend of a rise all across Europe, as Brexit you can't blame Brexit for that. There are spikes in anti-Semitic hate crime whenever the media focuses on Israel. Which it does far more than any other comparable issue. This is encouraged by the Left. Especially by the present leadership of the labour party (who are now being investigated over accusations of anti-Semitism) And we know that Islamist terror groups carry out attacks precisely because they want to create conflict between the majority and Muslim communities.
