In 2008, Human Rights Watch accused Chávez and his administration of engaging in discrimination on political grounds, eroding the independence of the judiciary, and of engaging in ''policies that have undercut journalists' freedom of expression, workers' freedom of association, and civil society's ability to promote human rights in Venezuela''. Chávez kicked them out of the country. Despite being oil rich, the disastrous policies of the socialist government (praised by both Owen Jones and Jeremy Corbyn) have led to desperate food shortages, a crises in health care, and a serious shortage of other basic supplies. This has led to food riots on the streets, and what is known as the “Maduro Diet”. The Venezuelan health minister, Anotnieta Caporale, was recently sacked because she released a report on the 30% increase in infant mortality and the staggering 65% rise in women dying in childbirth since the last time the government compiled data. So, having lied about the Chávez regimes' human rights record, praised the complete destruction of the Venezuelan economy, ignored the arrest of opposition leaders, and helped whitewash the Chávez governments' crackdown on opposition media, Owen Jones would now very much like you to vote for another 'anti-imperialist' socialist fuckwit. So you too can benefit from a complete breakdown in society just like our comrades in Venezuela.

Socialism means ''an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy, as well as a political theory and movement that aims at the establishment of such a system.' If you have a system where there is private ownership of the means of production (as in Scandinavia), that's not socialism.

Yeah, because we've had food riots, the closing down of critical media, arrests of opposition leaders, infant mortality skyrocketing. Don't you ever get tired of having to hide the truth?

That's the best you can do is it? Yet another socialist 'revolution' goes the same way as every other socialist revolution, and you think it's in some way comparable to 2008? Venezuela is oil rich. But farmers can't afford to buy feed for their animals, because the government dictates prices. So their produce gets less and less until you have empty shelves in the stores. Everyone knows what needs to be done. But the Maduro regime can't break with Chávez's revolutionary socialism, because that would be admitting the Great Leader was wrong all along (much like in North Korea). So instead they blame the opposition for being in the pay of foreign enemies. They arrest their leaders, close down critical media, and send in the army to guard run down power stations from imaginary 'saboteurs' (much like the Bolsheviks did in Soviet Russia). And then invite Champaign Trotskyists like Owen Jones to whitewash it all in the Independent.

The socialist elites can always rely on the support of useful idiots abroad. Meanwhile, the Chávez family and their loyal supporters appoint themselves the top jobs and make themselves billionaires. Like all socialist revolutions, it's all based on lies. They can't accept food aid, because again that would be admitting the failure of the Chávez ideology. So they demonise food aid programs, portraying them as agents of enemy states (just as North Korea does). The socialist regime has been in government since 1998. And it has no intention of giving away power at the ballot box. They tried to take power by force and failed. After that they played populist politics and won. But you only ever get one vote, once, under the socialist revolution. Then you're stuck with them for good. So while the regime denounces the opposition as traitors to the people (Fidel Castro does the same), Venezuela just gets poorer and poorer. So no. It's not complicated. It's just what happens when you force thro unworkable socialist dogma. It happens time and time again. And each time there's a fresh new batch of gullible simpletons who fall for it.

Only trouble is that you pay that to the government. And the NHS relies on government spending. So if Commissar Corbyn took over, the economy would collapse. No more NHS.

Red Firefly Capitalism has most certainly lifted millions out of poverty. Just ask the Chinese. Is it perfect? No. But then no system ever is. But I don't see why anyone would use that as an excuse to opt for a far worse system?
