  4.  @sowhat515  The UK government is led by someone who campaigned to remain in the EU. Which in effect makes it a remainer government. And parliament is overwhelmingly in favour of remaining, which is why it voted down both the negotiated leave deal and leaving with no deal at. In fact, the only thing they haven't voted against is to remain. Either way, you can't put this down to those who voted to leave.

  5.  @VoVo-ev3zz  Protecting workers rights and the environment has nothing to do with EU membership. As a government can make its owns policies on such issues. In fact, in 2016 Corbyn himself claimed he was very concerned at how the EU was damaging workers rights all across Europe and 'secretly negotiating' a trade deal with the US. Remaining in the customs union is not a good idea, as not only would it not be beneficial for the UK when trading with non-EU countries, it would also prevent the UK from making trade deals with non-EU countries. Which is one of the benefits of leaving the EU. So if the UK remains in the customs union then it would not have left the EU.

  6.  @VoVo-ev3zz  You're making the argument against the right of UK citizens to vote for the government of their choice to enact policies they agree with. Essentially, you see the EU as a way to circumvent the democratic process when it goes against you. That sounds very much like an argument against democracy itself. Yes, trade negotiations do take time. But the UK is as important a market for EU goods as is the US. And the UK can absolutely negotiate trade deals on its own behalf, just as Japan is able to do. This is the very reason why the remain campaign lost the referendum. It relied on the notion that the UK (the 5th largest economy in the world) was unable to stand on it own feet. It offered nothing but pessimism, defeatism, and fear - Thats a very hard sell. And I would argue not a sound basis for a political union with Europe. Which is exactly what the EU is.

  8. I hardly think the UK would have offered to give away £39 billion for nothing. It was a deal negotiated between the two. But rejected by parliament 3 times. So if the EU doesn't start talking, the UK leaves with no deal.

  12. It's quite incredible that Channel 4 news decided to black out part of a cartoon. This is not because it might cause 'offence' (I have seen the original), but because of Islamic blasphemy laws against depicting their prophet. And I find that genuinely shocking.

  27. I agree. You won't see the 'Stop the War Coalition' demonstrating outside the Syrian embassy, or the Russian embassy, or the Iranian embassy. Because they have no problem with wars fought in defence of mass murdering dictators. Only with wars fought against mass murdering dictators. Corbyn only preaches peace, pacifism, and fluffy bunnies, when its in defence of something he cares little about. In other words, western liberal democracy. But when it furthers his own ideology, he's more than willing to sit with violent sectarians and terrorists. He's a gift for Iran and the kremlin. Some 6,500 Russian twitter accounts backed him in the last election. Because they know he'd be a pushover. Actually, he wouldn't even stand up to begin with. He's praised the kremlin's propaganda channel, RT. And has worked on the ayatollah's PressTV. With that in mind, he's really not the best person to give an opinion on a free media.

  30. backfromcuba A referendum on the final negotiated deal would mean just that. An acceptance or rejection of any deal on offer. A rejection would not, if those who advocate another referendum are being honest, mean the UK remains in the EU. So by all means put the deal to a referendum. With the understanding that the UK is still withdrawing from the EU whichever way the vote would go. This is important. Because if the EU knew that a rejection of any deal in a second referendum would lead to the UK remaining within the EU, then all it would have to do is offer the very worst deal possible in order for the UK to remain. And no country should ever go into negotiations where the opposing side has a vested interest in offering the worst deal possible. And no one should want that. Because these negotiations should be done with a view that any deal will represent the future relationship between the UK and the EU for many decades to come. Otherwise there is absolutely no point in any negotiation. Which is, essentially, what those who want a second referendum fully understand. If they don't, then they must be a pretty stupid bunch.

Social status within these groups is not based on wealth. Sure, there are no millionaire school kids sitting in boardrooms of multinational companies earning six figure salaries. But then would we ever expect there to be?

And if the only role models a kid has as he's growing up are people who glorify violence and anti-social behaviour, and who gain status thro doing so, while continually teaching them that they act the way they do because of wider society, then its not hard to guess what the result of that will be. Luckily, most kids also have role models within the family that override outside influences. So they act differently when they're around parents or grandparents then when they are within their age group. But what happens if they dont?

  35.  @usxnews1834  Poverty does not lead to people stabbing someone else with a knife. As I said, this is a problem with young males. Abuse has nothing to do with poverty, as it can and does happen in all families regardless of their income. And we already have free education in the UK. Policing is an issue. Because if a kid is brought up in a lawless community where he doesnt feel safe, he's more likely to get drawn into gang culture as a gang offers protection. And this is why kids often say they carry knives - for protection. What they mean is, in their world its dog eat dog - and in that situation social status is all important. That culture then becomes his way of life. Which in turn leads to criminality which restricts his later prospects. Then he has kids. Then he walks out on them. Because thats the world he grew up in. Its not really fashionable to say this, but society functions better when we all adhere to certain standards - poor working class housewives scrubbing their doorsteps back in the 1940s, because they don't want the neighbours looking down on them, that kinda thing. But if you teach a generation they have rights, but no responsibilities, that no one should judge them, and worse, its ultimately all the fault of 'society', then communities start breaking down.

  36.  @usxnews1834  Absolute poverty in the UK has been going down. But inequality is pretty high. And, I believe, it is inequality that drives crime. Only I dont think its possible to eradicate inequality in a free society. Eradicating poverty, real poverty, and raising the level of those at the bottom is a long term aim, and possible. But the ability to do that requires a healthy economy. And that is a problem beyond the control of any one individual. And ultimately, it is the individual that is responsible for crime, and therefor knife crime. It is not economists and politicians who stab children on the street. Nobody scores points for wanting to end poverty. Only there is no short term magic formula for that. In the meantime, it makes sense to teach young kids personal responsibility. Because a free society cannot function without that

  43. I like Blair. But I don't agree with him on the EU. I detest Putin and his lying criminal KGB regime. But thats not a reason to support the EU. Why are the remain campaign still campaigning? Where are they getting their cash from? No point complaining about division, while your own refusal to accept a democratic vote (and willingness to paint half the population as 'racist') keeps that division going. Where do your allegiances lie? With the UK? Or the EU?
