The many thousands of Indians who volunteered (military service in India was entirely voluntary) was seen as a vindication of the strength of the British empire. And much was made out of it. Open any pictorial history printed during that period, and you will see the pictures of gallant French Turcos and Indian troops arriving in France.

  21. A bit of historical revisionism going on here. With various groups, parties, and individuals all desperate to claim some of the glory. For example, the Communist Party of Great Britain. The only problem is, not only did British communist's actively work to undermine the war effort against nazism (as ordered to do so by the kremlin-at a time when nazi Germany and Soviet Russia were allied), but they also attempted to cover up the vast crimes carried out by Stalin (no doubt they still do). In fact, I'm guessing that many of these groups would have been crying 'No More War!' in the 1930's, for the exact same reasons as they do now.

Besides, there are many Brits who live and work outside the EU, and have always done so. So it seems pretty petty to give away control of your own destiny, simply because you personally want to live within Europe.

There were no NATO bases in Poland or the Baltics before Russia renewed its aggression towards its neighbours. You ask why NATO expanded east. If you knew anything about eastern European history as regards to Russia, you would already know the reason.
