This is all very strange. ''...EU competence is spread so widely''. This is not what the remain campaign told us. Before the referendum, they claimed that only a small fraction of UK law is effected by EU legislation. Were they being less than truthful? Were they lying? And how can the EU demand a pronto deal over EU citizens living in the UK, when they have refused to even begin talks? Where is the EU guarantee to UK citizens living in the EU? They seem to think that standing up for their own interests is legitimate, but that the UK has no right to do the same. In her letter, May points out that European security is more fragile today than at any time since the cold war. The UK is a leading member of NATO, a guarantor of Europe's security, and one of the very few European nations prepared to spend the required 2% of GDP on defence. Any harm Guy Verhofstadt or his rabidly anti-UK supporters do to the UK will most definitely damage UK-EU relations. And therefor European security. Is that really worth it? Can the EU afford to make an enemy of the UK along with all its other problems? It would help if the EU was led by adults. Rather than sulky children used to getting their way on all things. It seems they are accustomed to never hearing the words 'No'.
