  3. backfromcuba So basically you're saying that if you want to sabotage a referendum (or for that matter, a general election) all you have to do is infringe a minor technicality on spending, and the country must re-run the vote?

  4. backfromcuba A referendum on the final negotiated deal would mean just that. An acceptance or rejection of any deal on offer. A rejection would not, if those who advocate another referendum are being honest, mean the UK remains in the EU. So by all means put the deal to a referendum. With the understanding that the UK is still withdrawing from the EU whichever way the vote would go. This is important. Because if the EU knew that a rejection of any deal in a second referendum would lead to the UK remaining within the EU, then all it would have to do is offer the very worst deal possible in order for the UK to remain. And no country should ever go into negotiations where the opposing side has a vested interest in offering the worst deal possible. And no one should want that. Because these negotiations should be done with a view that any deal will represent the future relationship between the UK and the EU for many decades to come. Otherwise there is absolutely no point in any negotiation. Which is, essentially, what those who want a second referendum fully understand. If they don't, then they must be a pretty stupid bunch.

  6. And just to be clear, it is obvious that Putin attempted to interfere in the referendum. He did the same in the Scottish referendum (where he supported the SNP). And the general election (where he supported Corbyn). That is because Putin will support any cause he believes undermines, breaks up, or does damage to the UK. Because he's KGB. And that is what the KGB have always done. But I hear no argument that the UK should rerun the Scottish referendum. Or the general election.
