The EU is a political union. Trade is only a tool to that ends.

@biocapsule7311 The single market has nothing to do with the UK's EU contributions. As the single market does not require contributions from member states to make it work. The European Union has a budget to pay for policies carried out at European level (such as agriculture, assistance to poorer regions, trans-European networks, research, some overseas development aid) and for its administration, including a parliament, executive branch, and judiciary that are distinct from those of the member states - wiki As a non member of the EU, UK would no longer benefit from any of that, so no longer has to pay for it.

@randomdaveUK A referendum about the future of the UK, and whether it should continue with ever closer political union with the EU is a decision only UK citizens can make. And parliament voted to have a referendum. And it voted to implement the result. That's in no way 'advisory'.

Equally, the UK continuing to pay into the EU after its left is like your gym expecting you to continue paying for the equipment you no longer use!

@eddevlin72 I think we only have to look across the channel at Le Pen in France and Pegida in Germany, not to mention Tusks own Poland to see that racism is far worse in mainland Europe than in the UK. For the past decade or so net immigration into the UK has been around 250,000 to 300,000 a year. Does that sound like a racist country that hates foreigners to you?

@randomdaveUK As well as being incorrect (to vote in UK general elections you need to be a UK, Irish, or qualifying commonwealth citizen), thats as stupid a point as saying Macron wouldn't have been elected president of France if 1.379 billion Chinese had been allowed to vote.

Being against the high levels of immigration into the UK (300,000 a years) doesn't mean you hate immigrants or foreigners. Thats a simplistic explanation by people who either genuinely don't understand most peoples views on immigration, or who intentionally misunderstand them - mostly the latter.

@randomdaveUK If parliament rejects May's negotiated deal. And it rejects 'no deal'. And the EU has refused further negotiations. Then that leaves only one option. To remain. But parliament has already voted to implement article 50. Every major party promised before the referendum, during it, and after it, to respect the result. They did the same just before the last general election (apart from the limp dems, who make a habit of breaking promises). So voting against a 'no deal' Brexit is effectively voting against something they have already voted in favour of. And it makes any negotiations impossible, because, as we are seeing, all Brussels has to do is to refuse to negotiate, and, following the logic of a vote against 'no deal', the UK is forced to remain. This is the very obvious flaw in telling the side you are negotiating with 'We're leaving the EU, and if you dont give us a good deal we wont leave'. Any halfwit could see the result of that negotiating tactic. Which leaves the question, is parliament really that stupid? Or are they purposely undermining their own negotiations?

@randomdaveUK Pushing back the exit date just kicks the problem into the long grass. Thats bad for the economy. Business needs to know where it stands, and in order for the UK to be building a future outside the EU, potential trading partners need to know whether they should be talking to the UK, or to Brussels. Because so far no one knows. So no one can sign anything with anyone. An election won't change anything. If parliament refused to carry out the referendum result despite promising to do so before the 2017 general election, how will another election make any difference? Same with having another referendum. If they can ignore the result because they dont like it once, what makes you think they wouldn't do it a second time? Theresa May is a remainer. So she has negotiated a remainers deal. Half in/half out. But thats the worst of both worlds and not what the people voted for. The country was given 2 options. Stay or leave. It's time for everyone to accept the result and get on with making it happen.

As for NHS cuts. The labour party left the country in massive debt. We can all argue who's fault that was, but that debt is a fact. It's also a fact that because of that, the UK presently wastes £39 billion a year paying off the interest on that debt. That equate to more than the combined housing and environment budget. About £6 billion less than the entire defence budget. Or around about one quarter the entire NHS budget. So when talking about tory cuts, it might be helpful to acknowledge reality, and the very real reason why they were put in place. Otherwise we're all just living in fantasy land.

@randomdaveUK I would say May's deal is a bad deal. It commits the UK to pay vast sums of cash to the EU, without any recognition of the UK's share of those assets it will continue to fund (the EU's Galileo satellite navigation system, for example). This is essentially because May was hoping it would sweeten any future trade deals with the EU (!). But as the EU has refused to even begin negotiations on any trade deals, she has given away tens of billions for nothing. The Irish border backstop agreement is bad. It equates to the EU demanding it gets what it wants, otherwise it will tear up the good Friday agreement. Thats unforgivable. And all this before any trade agreement between the UK and the EU have even been discussed. And just to make things even worse, parliament wants to both reject May's deal, and to make a 'no deal' Brexit impossible. Even when it knows full well the EU has said it this or no deal at all. Parliament has no intention of allowing Brexit. You cannot negotiate with anyone while giving them an incentive not to negotiate at all.

@R0B1NG5 If you're still paying membership fees to a gym that no longer allows you to use its facilities, you need to do something about that.

@TorianTammas I can guarantee that if the EU were a gym club, it would have no hope of demanding any money from anyone is similar circumstances. As a gym club would have set out its rules beforehand, and be able to provide something more than just an arbitrary demand for a massive amount of cash from people who wish to leave.

@TorianTammas The EU is way more than just a trading block. It is a political union too. And I would very much enjoy watching the EU attempt to justify its totally arbitrary demands for £39 billion from the UK taxpayer in court. Courts tend to get very technical in the details of such things. And would no doubt be very interested in how Brussels came up with such a sum.
