  1. Socialists basically make the exact same promises as every other political movement. Altho they have an extremely bad track record of delivery. The way to beat Trump's brain dead populism, is not with more brain dead populism.

  2. Populism is telling people what they want to hear, rather than what they need to hear. It's ignoring reality. Selling them a lie. Free stuff. Infantilization of society. Promising them they can have everything with no cost. It's playing to envy and resentment. All things socialists are as good at as the far right.

It is, in fact, a promise made by all political extremes. The deconstruction of society (often with violence), the overturning of the old order. The aim is to do away with complexity and restart society in its most purest form. Have you read early Nazi campaign propaganda? It could just as easily have been written by a socialist. Which, of course, it was. National socialists. This is because the Nazis sold themselves as revolutionaries. That's how they got people to support them. It's how all populists get their support. Because no one ever wins by promising more of the same. The reality is that fascism and socialism are both authoritarian ideologies designed to subordinate the individual's rights and freedoms to that of the state. The people are made answerable to the state, rather than the state being answerable to the people. And as we are all individuals, we all suffer. That is the inevitable outcome of all authoritarian systems of government, whether on the far right or the far left.
