Taiwan also eliminated outbreak that peaked at over 700 daily cases
5
Those cases are recorded by cdc, and independent tallies by the 50 states+dc
3
Belgium is worst affected country in Europe per capita both by infections and deaths I believe
3
It's due to lack of exposure and worse vaccines
3
@SampoSaarela violence in the USA may also be due to George Floyd protest and cities defunding police
3
Even during ancient times, people who survived childhood largely lived to over 60 years old
3
Especially with a lot of people losing jobs and therefore health insurance recently
2
@maxlein1246 In Germany it is. I've heard Afd supporters are lot less vaccinated than supporters of other parties
2
Australia is a western country at the end of the day. It speaks western language(English), is mainly populated by European/white people, main religion is Christianity and has western culture(including being more individualist than collectivist and more socially progressive than conservative like Asia). Due to it being western country, it looks for more culturally similar western countries, rather than Asian countries with largely different cultures for advice
2
Evidence to prove it?
2
Those states have urban areas too, where most infections are concentrated
2
@georgiamurphy8911 it differs by country. I believe in Australia, the goal is actually 0 or elimination
2
Also perhaps seasonality plays a role. The US tends to see lower transmission and hospitalization during the spring months compared to UK and Europe. It's because US is located further south, thus temperatures warms up to a comfortable level faster during the spring
2
@barryhamm3414 Australia is doing excellent compared to rest of world
2
As for vaccination rate, uneven geographical distribution of vaccination rates is also a weakness that results in increased spread, as shown in countries like USA and Germany where vaccination rates vary a lot depending on what part of country you're in. Virus exploits under vaccinated parts of these countries with those regions serving as holes in terms of virus defense before exploding throughout the country
2
@klauskarpfen9039 Seasonality. The hot Japanese summers drove people indoors under AC resulting in increased transmission
2
@macmcleod1188 And higher vaccination rate is one of the major reasons why Western Europe has made significantly more progress at reducing covid deaths since pre-vaccination than the US
2
Not really. Many US states around 35 degree north has had brutal outbreaks including last summer despite hot, sunny weather
2
UK actually has one of lowest mask wearing rate in the world
1
No, they had low vaccination rate prior to spike
1
@marydinev5264 Mostly. They hit 2 million doses per day during peak, I believe
1
In California, schools and bars have not yet opened
1
Not true, it has been. There has been debate over measures, the travel scheme and suitability of Olympics over covid
1
Wasn't the case in countries like South Korea, Singapore and Australia though(also rather recently vaccinated and with high uptake)
1
Anti-lockdown movement started because lots of people lost their jobs over lockdown
1
UK doesn't have borders either. Yet, much higher infections
1
perhaps the mandatory centralized quarantine also helps reduce infection, since household infections are a main driver
1
Indonesia is also way less vaccinated than Japan
1
@dantronics1682 Probably 95% of his friends lol
1
I mean hair loss is very common naturally at that age(mid 70s)
1
Nigeria barely tests
1
@ThingsWeMayNotKnow Nigeria is tropical. Dark skin people are suited to tropical climates. Dark skinned people who live in colder, less sunny climate zones suited for light skinned people have heightened risk for vitamin D deficiency. Likewise, light skinned people who live in tropics have heightened risk of skin cancer
1
south korea infection and fatality is even lower than japan
1
Also it's based on a particular point in time. High percentage of over 65 who contracted covid died and those who recovered see their antibodies from infections wane faster than younger people thus lower antibody levels in over 65 population at a particular time
1
There aren’t anywhere in the US that still mandate masks
1
Also perhaps seasonality is at play(South Korea is colder than Japan and South Korean weather is getting cold while weather in Japan is still quite comfortable)
1
@rodwallace6237 and SARS cov-1 wasn't widespread. Very few people were infected outside of hong kong, taipei, beijing, singapore and hanoi
1
@kapdolkim1914 Maybe those restaurants weren't popular to begin with even before pandemic, including his. Restaurants I go to are packed
1
@nursesida Texas did have restrictions until March 2021 and some local restrictions lasted until May I believe. Also death rate is quite high in Texas at 251/100k
1
I’ve heard the tribes are pissed with the governor for refusing to allow them to set roadblocks to protect themselves
1
It seems like the 3 northern New England states-Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont are almost completely spared. Barely any cases in those 3 states. They’re just chilling while rest of USA is struggling
1
@ghwk-phd2784 lockdowns can only stop pandemic if you open up after 0 cases for 1 incubation period. For countries with tiny outbreaks like Australia and New Zealand, it’s possible. For USA and Europe, it’s already impossible, unless you lockdown for couple of years
1
No, I believe Japan has significantly stricter definition of covid death than western countries like US and UK
1
Well Hong Kong's immunity level is far higher than mainland
1
@gauloisrefractaireenexilvo4366 Yes and also because of far higher previous level of infection in Hong Kong than mainland
1
In America, democrats and republicans view pandemic completely differently
1
@MrBallynally2 no, it’s due to extremely low testing rates. Look at the death rate
1
You also have to take into account how rapidly Japan’s population is aging which generally increases deaths every year. It’s actually first time in quite a long time that Japan saw a decrease in death rate
1
its improvement from 2500 deaths a day
1
What about Milwaukee, Salt Lake City, Oklahoma City
1
Average deaths by flu. Around 30-60k per year. Average age dead from virus. Around 80. 85% who contracted virus wore a mask regularly, according to cdc study
1
Japan also tests at lower rates than other developed countries. Something you don't know about
1
Way lower
1
Isn't the case with delta variant in Europe though, eg (UK cases surged, declined slightly then stuck at high plateau), Central Europe, Ireland, Low countries(cases rose, then plateaued at moderate levels before skyrocketing)
1
People congregate inside under AC and being inside increases transmission
1
Many European countries with similar vaccination Japan is seeing much greater infection rate. And this is on top of natural immunity rates being much higher in Europe than Japan too
1
don't forget, high population density with crowded trains + no masks=nyc in march and early april, when usa recommended against masks and few wore them, even in nyc. Densely populated nyc recorded over 800 deaths a day, more than tokyo since the start. NY was one of first places in US to introduce mask mandate, and has highest compliance rate, now they have one of lowest infections in USA despite high population density. If tokyo was like sweden. I'm pretty sure its gonna have colossal death toll
1
Plus the fact that major cities have younger population than other parts of the country, and this is a disease where death risk goes up exponentially by age
1
Cutieplus still, japan did so much better than western countries
1
No, it's not. It's due to the heat driving people indoors. It surges in southern states regardless if it's popular for vacation, like AL, MS, OK, AR, also sees huge summer surge despite not being that popular for summer vacation
1
Islands doing well? Well UK is an island and they're doing very badly
1
Rate varies wildly between state and city. In nyc, there’s hardly anyone not wearing mask. In Dakotas and Wyoming, most people don’t wear masks
1
lol, japan is literally known for its nightlife. Every night, tons of young people going out at night to socialize
1
@salem9477 USA also has high proportion of population that came from hotter climate zones, from the blacks originally brought in as slaves from Africa, to the more recent immigrants from variety of tropical countries, and they often get vitamin D deficiency due to being in unsuitable climate and their bodies being less efficient at converting sunlight into vitamin D compared to people from colder climate zones
1
Unrelated topic. I’ve heard that in the US, rural people tend to be strongly against single payer
