@diqiuren Like someone did video practicing Shanghainese with locals in Shanghai where he(someone trying to learn the language but speaks it at decent level already) tries to talk to people on a pretty crowded street in Shanghainese and most people did not understood him

Theory is that Guangdong is far south, and surrounded by mountains to the north keeping it insular meaning that the language that derived ended up being closer to Ancient Chinese than further north where the languages saw more influence from invading tribes

Personally I think Houston is part of US most similar to Chongqing. It’s huge, yet not so well known outside their respective countries, it’s known for it’s food including spicy food, hot humid weather, rivers, floods, etc. Also, considered westernmost distinctively southern city by many in their respective countries

I've heard generally older people in traditionally non-Mandarin speaking speaking parts of China tend to have thick accents. Generally goes like this. People under 30 tend to barely have accents, 30-45 slight accent, 45-60 moderate accent and 60+ tend to have thick accent
