The universities are lost, for various reasons (including 'nuance', as you describe it), but even so, there are enough bright young minds in the field of physics who generate new and crazy ideas to be tested, so if this is a massive and fundamental failing it must be at a deeper level than academic promotion. We now have enormous capacity for experimentation and calculation so is there some misunderstanding of mathematics or the real world that prevents progress? What other possibilities are there?
