  1. Hello felloow Illawarrian...you are correct with the suggestion of a microclimate. Long before your time (not mine) there used to be up to five coke ovens plants in and around town, the main one being in the steelworks. Water vapour, from coke quenching, was thought to be pushed in against the escarpment and would become trapped between Mount Keira and Mount Kembla..our own Illawarra Triangle. It used to result in some amazing rainfall, so much so that much of that area is sub tropical rain forest.

  2. Your hurricanes are termed cyclones / tropical cyclones in Oz. We've had some doozies since records have been kept the most dangerous being Cyclone Tracy that turned Darwin into a pile of matchsticks back in 1975. The population was airlifted from Christmas Day and moved south. The Tropical coast of Queensland iand occasionally Western Australia are other areas where it appens.
