@Diana...certainly the second best....the best if the Hume Motorway between Sydney and Canberra...politician's chauffeurs know it well. Ford Ccrtinas and Holden Toranas must have been before your time !

How can we forget the Thunderdome. The famous Bob Jane was one of the drivers of the concept. shame it never really hit any heights. Bob was a famous winner of the earlier 500 miles race though. He either won or was co-driver for two of the three Armstrong 500's at Phillip Island before winning the first two when the race transferred to Bathurst. He was part of an association with Harry Firth who gave Ford their early success with the specialised Cortina GT / GT500 based on English Lotus Cortina

Adelaide, Townsville, Newcastle, Sydney Olympic Park.......

You mention Pikes Peak as the only US facility that comes to mind as being similar in concept to Mt. Panorama but as an American I'm surprised circuits such as Watkins Glen in NY State don''t raise a mention. A lovely circuit where the USF1 GP has been held amongst many other classes. Two Aussies also hold class track records for the circuit.

Indeed, some literally took off. It was also used regularly for car racing..the 1938 AGP was held there and another three times before 1958. I stand corrected but think the motorcycles started using it about three years earlier.

@IWrocker I totally disagree with him...he clearly has no clue that NASCARs have road races on several excellent tracks just like Panorama.

Adelaide, Gold Coast, Townsville, Sydney Olympic Park. Newcastle are also places where street circuits have been used.

You are very confused with your trivia. It was Englishman Edward Hargraves who discovered gold in that region in 1851. English born Lawrence Hargraves, who was born in 1850, performed most of his innovative work with box kites at Bald Hill, Stanwell Park, north of Wollongong.. Lawrence died in Sydney in 1915.

@shanehansen3705 I would not have posted the information without confirming it first and I live 20 minutes from Bald Hill. I have studied Lawrence Hargraves and early Aussie aviators for around 50 years. If you know how to perform internet searches check it out to save yourself any more embarrassment. A search for Edward Hargraves will yield over 50,000 responses in 0.60 seconds...more info with searches for Lawrence. The two men were born around 50 years apart. I'd recommend you reference an online dictionary as well and learn some proper spelling.

The Bathurst 500 / 1000 was always a distance race...you are confused with the 12 hour sports car or production car races held at the same track at different times of the year.

Americans happen to know a little bit about harness racing....by way of example have a look at Yonkers Raceway in New York City....sh1ts on anything we Aussies have.

This race was not part of a world event but another group did align another race with the Euro touring cars
