Carriages that do not fit tunnels, light rails cracking part, intercity carrriges that did not fit platform hangover, now ferries that can't take the rough waves crossing between the Heads, Rivercats that did not fit under bridges.. Can't recall one overseas purchase where there hasn't been a stuff up. Oh, forgot five billion at submarines we will never have. Unbelievable incompetence.

Perth has had the best system for the population for two decades. Being our youngest Capital they have made brilliant progress with the combination of rail, light rail and buses systems. I'm from NSW and Sydney will never match it.

Do you realise that is no better than back in 1938 or thereabouts. Especially with the original (and beautiful) Spirit of Progress running to Albury or Geelong.

The Colorado River is much longer than what the Grand Canyon is and there are more than a dozen canyons the Colorado flows through. We even have two Grand Canyons of our own in Oz.

Are we not talking about regional rail systems here, that is the equivalent of what is termed intercity railways. In this regard Australia is pathetic when compared to northern hemisphere minus the US. It is one thing we stuffed up on in the 60's up till which time we had brilliant services to places that have since been closed down. The influence of the big road haul companies started to impact. We commenced a fast rail (>200kph) plan back in the 80's with a selected route from Melbourne to Brisbane but it fell apart while signalling systems were being worked on by programmers. Such a system (but VFT) today would work well particularly if supported by networks of HSR's.

Are you confusing HSR with VFT? the former is up to say 200-250kph and latter above that to perhaps 500kph.Oz should have one good VFT Melb->Bris with support network of HSR's
