What? When there are official World Chamionships sanctioned by the global peak bodies and played between affiliated nations in each of the sports.

It is an annual Rugby LEAGUE series and the State of Origin references the States from which the players first played. States other than the two that participate would not have the playing strength to compete.

Since 1979, the final year of Packer's World Series Cricket, there has been no reference to games since that time being World Series. In fact the statistics compiled during those years were separated from those compiled when playing traditional cricket (i.e. ICC sanctioned games) which continued to be played. Packer was prepared to introduce an evening time baseball tournament if his thrust at the cricket establihment had not come off. In any case the MLB World Series is legitimately named having been in existance since 1903. The MLB Commissioner at that time agreed with the League Commissioners that the winning teams from the National League and the newly formed American League should play off and be named Champions of the World. It was a fair call given there were anly 3-4 other nations playing the game at that time....Australia being one. There should be no concern re the name given MLB created the World Baseball Classic two decades ago and in that very strong tournament the best players from the world actually play with their nations. Japan won the first two events and is also the current Olympic Champions. Also a World Championship under the auspices of the former IBDA has been played for since 1938, Cuba being the most successful nation by a long shot.

Since MLB and the then IBAF created the World Baseball Classic, first played in 2006, the winners of the MLB World Series are referred to as the MLB World Series Champions and not World Champions. While it is known that MLB atttracts the cream of global players (there has been >40 Aussies play) it is not a competition played by national teams as indeed the WBC is. Further, a World Cup / Championship was played under the auspices of the global peak body (IBAF) from 1938-2011. Japan is currently ranked as the #1 nation and is also the Olympic Champion. Cuba won the World Cup 25 times.
