Steel rods !!!...Iron ore (+coke, limestone) is converted to Iron (blast furnace) firstly and then refined into steel of set specification.(in BOS furnace or electric arc or ancient open hearth) Refined steel is rolled / formed into required end product.

Most definitely NOT pig iron. Pig Iron results when molten or cast Iron is poured into small ingots called PIGS. Processed in a Pig Mill. Called Pigs because of the shape formed. Once cooled this can be transported and is also used for remelting in foundries. Pig Iron therefore has the same chemical composition as Iron as cast at the blast urnace.

@peterenis3496 Steels are ALLOYS of Iron with elements that are beneficial to produce the desired structural properties. I know of at least 300 different grades of steel. Most common alloying element is Manganese.

@umaid-nungshatpa Something = Carbon, Phosphorous, Manganese, Silicon, Sulphur, Nickel, Chromium, Molybdenum, Copper, Aluminium, Tin, Niobium, Titanium, Vanadium, Boron, Calcium, Arsenic, Antinomy, Caesium, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen..all of which can be analysed for in the certification of steels.

@jacksons1010 So very correct. We Aussies saw the writing on the wall when, in the late 60's-70's we had endless "visits" from Asians learning from us. We were dragging the chain but got our fingers out and started modernising with BOS operations and slab casters from the early 70's. Old Open Hearths and ingot route steel was retired. The plant changed to output of more niche grades especially for coated steels. In a good outcome several finishing plants were established throughout Asia.

Sadly, yes. Failure to keep up with modernisation and production efficiency had much to do with it. Some of the plant even made its way to Asian plants.

@iancanada6875 it is an Integrated Steelworks meaning it performs the full process from unloading of raw materials through to loading of finished products.

@clintongriffin2077 Steel was being produced for centuries before the USA was founded. If the USA was so advanced why were they using such ancient technology until 50 years ago.

@lookoutforchris Real pig iron is actually made when molten iron is cast into small moulds and solidified in a pig mill. This is done rarely these days and allows for transporting and remelting in say, a foundry.

@JohnSaccoccio Yes. The Sinterng process generally fuses cold return fines into a more lumpy material that can be charged as blast furnace feed and hence not clog the furnce up. . you can see beds of materials set out here that are being blended in preparaton for sintering.

@ae4164 I can understand why hence my additional info. The term is a hangover from WW2 when nations that produced excess sold piggies to other nations. We Aussies had a wartime Prime Minister Bob "Pig Iron" Menzies who approved the sale of pig iron to then warmongering Japan. Sensible maritime workers stopped the transportation. Best.

it is actually iron ore fines...the rock sized ore breaks up with handling and in transit. Why would they use a much less pure material over purer ore from Australia or Brazil.

Back to the calculator you go. US Steel did not produce half that amount based on last year's production. You are also stating a statistic for steel and then comparing to Iron production at a time when there was very little science known about iron or steelmaking processes.

@BlackPill-pu4vi It is all well and good to be patriotic and sing his praises but he did not invent steel or refine it better, cars were being produced for decades before he came along and he did not introduce mass production but rather he introduced production lines for cars.
