  1. Russia was in disarray during the scramble for Africa so African countries never experienced its colonialism. Their willingness to overlook Russian atrocities outside Africa in exchange for more benign support within their own countries belies this. The same reason so many African countries are willing to get into debt traps with China in exchange for infrastructure projects. Their thinking is "well, at least Xi Jinping isn't King Leopold and look at the shiny new port we got!"
