You can just say “saw” and “baw”. Everyone else does. Source: work in this specific industry. Also 50M parts for $1.40 is a whopper untruth. I think you confused bulk pricing per unit with order pricing. A product run capable of covering an entire generation of smart phone wouldn’t cover the cost of a single photomask for said filter if $1.40 bought 50 million units.

@Braydan789 yes, by design. Almost all of it is IP protected. And the process integration matters much more than raw capital capability. Most RF fabs are using equipment that was already considered old in the early 1990’s by silicon CMOS standards.

Yeah I laughed out loud at that. Based on that price, enough SAW to cover an entire generation of iPhone wouldn’t net enough profit to cover a single photomask.

@snorman1911 yeah and as someone else pointed out he says “more than what the bucket costs” then said he felt bad for the manufacturer’s profit margins. It’s just a dumpster fire series of sentences. lol

@rrai1999 “more than what the bucket costs” then saying “I feel bad for the saw manufacturers” then makes ZERO sense.

Yeah that was either bad writing or a misunderstanding. He was describing bulk pricing but misinterpreted it as an insanely low unit cost.

Surprising because it’s laughably untrue. Think about it for even ten seconds and you’ll see why.

@ugarit5 I continue to be perplexed by people who think every fuck up on YouTube is a joke or a troll.

@Luxcium sure, maybe if your bucket cost $10M

@chrismofer somewhere between $0.05 and $0.15 per unit seems about right. They are usually not sold directly though. The filter is part of an amplifier or signal package chip that sells to the end user for a couple bucks.

In this case it was a mistake. The original quote was clearly about bulk pricing on a unit basis, not the total cost of 50 million filters.

“Apple was an 800lb gorilla dick to their suppliers and forced them to innovate in exchange for their business.” Ever was it thus.
