@Taygetea a bit different today because demand is still ludicrously strong. To their credit however, this time most semi manufacturers resisted the siren call of overbuilding capacity. And now with interest rates the way they are, there’s no way more capacity that wasn’t already under construction is going to start.

@TamagoHead SRAM is definitely still in use; its applications are just different to DRAM. SRAM cells are significantly larger, complex (they use latching to store data instead of simple charge like DRAM) and must be continuously energized to retain data. But it’s stupid fast, so it’s usually only used for onboard cache.

@TamagoHead all good. It’s a ridiculously specialized field. To the point I probably can’t get a job doing anything else at this point. And yeah, Motorola was truly a king of industry in semiconductors for a long time. In the end, I think bad management, bad culture, and bureaucratic bloat got them.

No, he is correct. Memory capacity IS reported in bits. Because the cell size to store one bit is the critical scaling factor, not the word line size.

I should clarify: while indeed consumers are marketed to with DIMM capacities in bytes, manufacturers and semi industry in general spec memory chips in bits.

I mean, good luck inventing immersion and EUV from scratch. China has been dumping money into government tech programs and domestic foundries for 20 years and still can’t build a stepper worth a shit.
