It’s amazing how opposition doesn’t show up to elections when you put them in prison for insulting Modi and the BJP.

@artman12 Rahul Ghandi for one at the national level. Plenty more at the state level.

Crazy idea, but hear me out: it’s possible to do two things at once.

@stripyrex_gaming yes I’m sure a political class that throws people in prison for insulting the prime minister when they just happen to oppose the BJP in elections, is totally honest about its own polling.

@edgeplayz7 “the other guys were corrupt so I should be allowed to be corrupt too”. I don’t think you understand how a functioning democracy works. All Gandhi said was that Modi was a criminal. Now he’s probably going to jail and can’t be elected. If saying “the sitting prime minister sucks” is a crime, your country is not a functional democracy.

If Modi would fuckin chill with his political suppression tactics and unhinged Hindu nationalism, India would rise a lot faster.

@theWholesome28th oh well I guess that’s ok then? Wtf 😆

@artman12 this ignoramus tankie has likely never heard the words “Aadhaar” or “UPI”, let alone understood that India has been formalizing the economy for hundreds of millions of people for over a decade.

@RR-pc7yv wow brilliant argument. Where’s IndiaSuperClean when you need him.

@archismaanrudra876 Apple, meet orange.

@shiveshsingh3169 the person who is in power who doesn't put a stop to it is the responsible party. They are the ones who can end it. That makes it their problem and their fault for indulging in it. Stop with the "you do it too" bullshit.
1
@shiveshsingh3169 simple. The BJP is in power and they’re using it to preserve their power and circumvent democracy. If the INC was putting Modi in prison for criticizing him, THEY would be the tyrants. Doing the right thing isn’t about pointing to everyone else and justifying your behavior because they’ve behaved badly in the past. It’s about what YOU choose to do. Especially when it comes to trying to preserve your power and privilege when you have control of it. You can have the best policies in the world. But if you put people in jail to get them done because losing power would mean not finishing your agenda, you’re no different than the CCP claiming suppression of dissent is necessary for progress. It shows you don’t actually care what your citizens want: you wanting power and control is what matters.

@shiveshsingh3169 It will be a non-issue until it’s an issue. And when you craft your electorate like Modi has done, both by removing the competition and treating Muslims like second class citizens, it’s very easy to say results represent “the will of the people”. Even though to some extent the “will” is a direct result of the ruling party’s malfeasance. For a worse example, look at Turkey’s Erdogan. He has done much of the same thing, except he’s actually incompetent on top of corrupting his democracy. Institutions can’t rely on the benevolence of the humans that drive it: messing up your system may seem low priority now, but it’s only a matter of time. This is the problem with populism and ends-justify-means thinking. When things are going good in most people’s opinion, the people don’t worry about structural corruption. Then the country gets into a situation where the flaws and assumptions that came with institutional rot bite you in the ass. Look what happened with Trump. You get one bull in the China shop and suddenly you realize how flawed and vulnerable you let your system become.

Sectarian violence doesn’t justify making tens of millions of people second class citizens and throwing the political opposition in prison for “insulting” the ruling party. This is complete “ends justify the means” bullshit.
1
@artman12 yes. for crimes he committed with photographic evidence. He stole state secrets. He's not on trial for insulting Biden. JFC. GTFO of here you clown.
1
@artman12 on bail dumbass. His lawyers only secured a 1 month stay on his jail sentence. His case is still being appealed. In the meantime, Gandhi is still barred from running for public office in 2024 which is exactly what the BJP wanted.
1
@ajayvikramsingh6832 his lawyers got a 1 month stay while he appeals. If that runs out, he’s going to prison. He’s already convicted. And his crime was insulting Modi. Trump hasn’t even faced trial yet. What are you smoking?
1
@sumbajumba3037 his sentence has only been delayed for appeal. Keep up.

@Pinicle_of_evolution Trump isn’t on trial for insulting Biden, smooth brain.
