  1. Sanctions aren’t necessarily about completely starving the target state from resources. They can get them, one way or another. It’s about dramatically raising the cost of those essentials, hopefully to blunt other outputs. I’m sure Russia can get the latest Intel and TSMC chips if they really want them (and they do) but the black market cost is going to be way higher and the supply way less reliable.

  2. One other reason Australia might be predisposed to favor Ukraine and maintenance of the liberal rules-based order: they DO have a bully on their doorstep. One which frequently attempts to strongarm Australian policy and public discourse in exchange for undisturbed economic engagement, all the while manufacturing (literally) territorial claims in a mutual sphere of influence.
