  1. There is a delicate interplay of gender issues in an industry like hostessing. On the one hand, it's an extremely empowering profession: the girls have an enormous amount of influence on patrons and can easily take advantage of male instincts. On the other hand, gender equality is far from established in Japan. If the latter could be corrected, I see no reason why the former couldn't continue. Denying that both men and women can be seen as sexual objects is simply ignorant.
