Not giving people due process guarantees you will lock up innocent people because you’re arresting them on hearsay and the fact that they have tattoos. This path is like eating your seed corn. You were starving, yes. You have a full belly today, yes. But El Salvador is on a path to dictatorship with no conditions in sight on Bukele relinquishing control. He’s already passing thought-crime laws and laws so vague (“causing anxiety”) that they can be a pretext to arrest anyone who challenges him. He’s just another strongman who’s going to do whatever it takes to keep his power.

  3. All you have to do to get someone arrested in El Salvador is literally call the police. You don’t need evidence, you don’t need reasonable cause. You can just make your neighbors disappear, and then they get held without due process, basically forever. This is not sustainable. This is killing democracy and building an unassailable dictatorship. Bukele is just substituting himself for the gangs.
