@fredbarker9201 To really see his genius one has to study his Battle of Jaxartes, where in spectacular fashion he encircled 20,000 Scythian cavalry first he used catapults on land to cover his river crossing against their mounted archers then he sent forward a small vanguard to bait them to attack once they did and started circling around this small force like the Parthians at Carrhae, he then deployed archers and cavalry to attack their flanks and then his heavy infantry to pin them down. He encircled the encirclers. Just brilliant.

@fredbarker9201 The Persian Gates? Alexander hit the enemy from 3-4 different directions there, in difficult terrain and found a way around the Persians, even if it took a few weeks. I wouldn't class that as a defeat. The Siege of Tyre was 7 months in comparison.

@fredbarker9201 I wouldn't write Alexander off in a clash like that, Hannibal was great at studying terrain and setting traps, but Alexander was also good at deception and very quick to exploit a weakness in his enemies.

@fredbarker9201 Saying that though, i think sometimes the pinnacle of skill is also to subdue the enemy without even fighting... Ilerda campaign, Ulm, Torres Vedras prove that.
