@GameDevNerd house slaves were most often well treated, if you were a house slave its because you had a skill or you were a tutor, chattel slaves and ship slaves were a different story But house slaves often ate the same food as their masters, had their own rooms in the masters estate, and had essential duties in the house Slavery in Rome wasn't like how Hollywood portrays it

@Rudinn_Ranger most slaves in Rome (outside of Galley or ship slaves and chattle slaves) lived basically normal lives, slavery was used as a way to pay off debts for Roman citizens and for non Roman slaves, they often used them as tutors and caretakers for children

@Rudinn_Ranger yeah its one thing that people often times get confused about Rome, Ship Slaves were most often POWs or criminals hence why they were so badly treated (to the point the romans wouldn't save them in ship to ship combat and often times chained the slaves to the ship itself) But House Slaves were often roman citizens trying to pay off a debt for themselves or a family member but Hollywood likes the whole "yeah romans were sadistic and treated everyone horribly" trope there's even some sources showing that House Slaves were given expensive gifts by their "masters" or were given property upon their completion of the indentured contract some masters would also help their non roman slaves become Roman Citizens
