@zek9759 Then check out Abby Martin's lawsuit against the State of Georgia, or better yet, read Nadine Strossen's brilliant book on "hate" speech. Or Erwin Chemerinsky on First Amendment rights on campus. Or talk to Katie Halper, Aaron Mate, etc. I've just named five "lefties" who have fought for freedom of speech. Maybe you should be skeptical of all media "narratives?" They create what is known as availability bias, by repeating one thing over and over. Makes people think that one thing is the only thing.

True. So, when one of these people is invited to a university to speak, why do the protestors take the lazy way and try to shout him down? Why don't they organize a teach-in, in a nearby venue, so that the numbers that show up and the noise they make are obvious to all? These are universities. You cannot tell me they don't have the resources or the knowledge base to debunk racists, point by point and definitively. Yet they can do no better than to shout them down? How is that possible? Only through laziness. There is no other explanation. And how is it that this thread is just full of slogans and platitudes? Why is there no thinking going on? You make the right look good. Why do you? It's not that hard to refute them. For some reason I don't see much of that going on.

@Junebug89 You don't see how in the context of freedom of speech and expression, this could be turned against you? We now have proof that during the pandemic, people who spread propaganda and supported coercive tactics had a platform at Twitter, and those who presented actual facts were censored. Case in point: One person wrote a vague and impassioned claim that "children are dying of COVID!!" Look, a child can die of a common cold, so that is of course technically true. In response, someone posted ACTUAL CDC data, with a link, showing how unlikely it is for a child to die. (Some people pointed out that flu is more dangerous to children, which was not a great comparison, since flu is quite dangerous to children, and being just a little less so is no great shakes.) Guess who got censored and sanctioned? I have no problem with inviting employees to have input on the rules that apply to all speech. They are the ones who have to enforce them, and they have the experience that comes with doing the actual work, so they should have more say than the managers as far as I'm concerned. That's not the same as giving them license to create prior restraints to speech based on the cause du jour that they just got all excited about with their friends -- or that the DNC or the FBI told them to censor.

This video is fuel for misogyny. It hurts women. The two women on this show scare most people, and make working class women feel small. And people who never finished college (i.e., most people) see stuff like this and feel they will never know the rules. Congrats.

@davidaponte3600 There is nothing in your remarks that could hurt a victim. I just reread them. I'm positive. I was harassed so severely that someone who saw it -- a complete stranger -- approached me to offer to be a witness. The perp also posted pictures of himself online carrying an automatic weapon, and my job refused me added security at first, and investigated whether I said something that provoked him. (All the people who handled this were women, by the way, and I had 16 years there. Of course I left that job about five months later.) If what you wrote were hurtful, I think I would have spotted it. Talk about this with her again.

What does any of this have to do with employers imposing vaccine mandates on workers? A mask is like any other gear. We may have them during flu season in certain settings for the rest of our lives, probably a good idea. A vaccine goes into your body. You have to give informed consent to a medical provider.

@warmlycalculated390 The point was that any medical intervention IS UP TO THE PERSON to consent to. That isn't an opinion, it's the law. But now bosses can force you to consent? You don't see how that's an encroachment? Every leftist party and leftist union in Europe is anti-mandate. There are people who are vaccinated but decline to present their papers as a matter of principle, and there are people who are vaccinated who demonstrate in solidarity with the unvaccinated because they reject mandates. Not everyone is a Benthamite, you know.

@hughmac13 For your information, the First Amendment did not apply to the states until well into the twentieth century, and there was no argument to apply it beyond restricting what the federal government could do before the Fourteenth Amendment was passed. Nor did I impute to you positions you didn't take. That wasn't the point -- and never is, when hypotheticals are posed, modal verbs are used, counterfactuals serving as hypotheticals are mentioned to point out substantial risks, etc. The problem is, you DON'T know what you're talking about. We had much greater free speech rights before the 9/11 attacks, and before social media harrassment became ubiquitous. The very fact this government has been trying to extradite Assange is an assault on the Bill of Rights.

What did they actually say? Are they attacking her, or the IOC? Criticism of the IOC should be free speech everywhere. The actual words they used matter, but this video didn't tell us. It just showed her reaction. You know where lack of free speech protections goes, right? It was already used against students for Palestine -- even the peaceful ones, basically saying what Bernie Sanders and Amy Goodman are saying. That's what happens when you support criminalizing opinions.

@MP-db9sw If she was defamed or subjected to intentional infliction of emotional distress, then yes. She has a case. Musk already got away with defamation once. He is in court ALL the time. He's a dubious business man -- ask the original founders of Tesla, ask the State of California. But she has the burden of proof. You should care about free speech no matter the issue.

@MP-db9sw That's not a problem. Actual defamation is not First Amendment protected. Being wrong, however, usually is. Some people think the pro-Palestinian protestors are "wrong."

@MP-db9sw The remedy for false speech is true speech. I recommend Nadine Strossen's books on free speech. She is only slightly more pro free speech than I am, and the book is so well written that it allowed me to pinpoint my areas of disagreement and sharpen my arguments. I can't say more, it won't post. So much for free speech as a cultural value.
