  2.  @ResoluteDeicide  I'm a Parisian Maoist. The "creeps me out" comment was separate from the political judgment. Does Ryan have politics at all, or a Sixties Caravan "lifestyle?" That was a deliberately apolitical life, and took inspiration from people like Kerouac, who were frequently right of center.

  3.  @ResoluteDeicide  Oh, if you tell me that they're phonies at worst, unaware at best, and parasitic (someone else has to engage politically, and militarily, to secure this life for them), you'll get no argument from me. Plain as day. But this type of sheer self-indulgence and self-centeredness does not emerge in "collectivist" societies, in whatever way you decide to define that. I mean, follow a historian-archeologist-anthropologist like Emanuel Todd, if you like (probably the best of the bunch on this point). Or consider Marx's vision of an eventual communist society. Or modern-day Vietnam. It really doesn't matter. It's a subculture you find most often in the Five Eyes, and especially in its leader, the US. By far the US. But believe what you like. Blaming the Other is an American tradition.
