@paigeellen3762 Not what he said. He was arguing for doing an objective risk assessment. The truth is, being bold leads to both extremes -- great success and bankruptcy.

Edison was middle class, perhaps upper middle. He had a well-educated mother, and went to work at a young age. He wasn't born rich, but he had good luck making money starting in his teens.

@ToTheStardom What? You're opposed to cautious, sustainable activity? That can't hurt you.

@paigeellen3762 Well, both of my grandfathers were self-made millionaires when that was truly rare --- and both lost everything in WWII. Where does that put them? Europeans still understand tragedy.

@ToTheStardom "Free 30 minutes?" Don't you value your time? "16 minutes free this month only!" 16 sounds like more than 15; sounds more generous.

@ToTheStardom Well, in 2024, what level of risk do you think boldness brings? How large do you think the dishonesty factor is in making a lot of money? The risk of boldness isn't 100%, and the reward is above 0%. Dishonesty isn't a necessity, but it is often a large factor. Edison and Steve Jobs both knew that, as did Bill Gates. Every truthful biography is eye-opening if not shocking. I like Greene because he speaks truths others won't. You could say Edison was bold, but the same facts cited here also show he was manipulative. He did not succeed by "hard work" alone.

@Michael_Mane Actually, it isn't. Some may have the hands but not the elbows.

@paolo3287 I defer to Socrates in The Apology: there are two ways to reach "the top." One involves making yourself as excellent as you can possibly be. The other involves being willing to do anything to destroy your competition. Guess which has become popular lately?

@paolo3287 Hands are a metaphor for real productivity. OTOH, there is a saying about "sharp elbows," meaning you didn't earn your way to the top, you elbowed others out of your way.
