Moreover, people must not know France. There is no stigma against older people, like you see in the English-speaking world. Most older people go on to another job -- the one they've always wanted. They don't lie around starting at 62. Or they open a boutique, a bookstore, a cafe; they teach French to foreigners, or tutor part time. Or they paint or they write, if they have the talent. Or they keep a productive garden and some chickens. No wonder they are adamant about keeping the retirement age where it is. The last third of an adult life SHOULD be secure. Annie Ernaux was among the last to know that she had won the Nobel Prize at 82. She had her phone off while she was working. (Her response upon hearing the news was, "are you sure?" Contrary to propaganda, France is not an entitlement kind of place. They work and they fight for everything they have.)

"Full retirement age" there means only one thing: you can work as much as you like, and earn as much as you are able, with no loss of pension benefits, while being able to increase your benefits in subsequent years based on earnings. Draw Social Security benefits before that, and you will be penalized for working at the same time. Draw a teachers' pension (or a firefighter's pension, etc.) in addition to Social Security, and you will be penalized for life.
