I thought they were far too young. It's not age-appropriate for anyone but Mom to discuss this with a little girl who is barely pubescent, and her needs are for other information, not for being cautioned about this. If she needs information, she should feel free to ask her mother.

They are only 12 or 13? My father didn't give me Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask until I was a high school graduate.

@ednathompson7185 I agree. It's especially important that children feel free to ask. I just think 13 is much too young for a father-daughter discussion that specific. He can say general things like, "purity before marriage makes for the happiest families." Leave it to mom for the rest.

@kellharris2491 Not explicitly at 13, in my opinion, no. That is a very tender age, AND the attitude in their home is by no means light and easy but quite controlling and judgmental. A family that was always open and taught morals but acknowledged and respected choices and a freer attitude --- well, that might be different. This isn't that. I'm glad my father didn't talk to ME about virginity at 13, my gawd. But the summer before college, he told me not to believe that men had no ideals and "only wanted one thing." He also gave me a copy of Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask. Er, can you say different value system?
