Is that why most people disappoint me, and I'm still surprised?

There are far more good people than bad, but very few of either. Most people are mediocre. This means the bad will oftentimes prosper. I think Carl Elliott's experience is a better guide than this fluff. He is very much worth reading.

Those of us who are familiar with the phenomena that Carl Elliott and Robert Whitaker describe in their books, not to mention authors like Glenn Greenwald, With Liberty and Justice for Some, might have a more realistic view. Not to mention, what do you think those who truly achieved great things -- a J. M. Coetzee, a James Baldwin, a Toni Morrison, for example -- are or were really like? Anyone who is well-read does not appreciate pablum.

@migduroli Scientific? Who lived to reproduce? And then, whose children, once born, survived to reproduce? Start by thinking that through. I can figure out why propensity for both trust and distrust, optimism and pessimism, persist in human populations, with the latter being more common. Besides, to "trust others" must mean to trust cynics, too. That there is mathematics.

Trust is why I can never retire. Trust is why both I and my parents worked at companies or firms where serious crimes were being committed at the top, without the rest of us knowing about it. Nor did I expect the US to bomb where my family is from, but . . . I probably should have? Well, it was a surprise to me anyway. As for the people I know who were emotionally abused following a cancer diagnosis . . . No. I'm not going to tell you, except to say it includes the mothers of pediatric cases.

@Pavanesh I'm trilingual. I use all three daily! Thanks for offering a POSITIVE suggestion. Studying a language WILL lead to learning it.
