So what if American kids can't read? Lots of other kids read a ton.

These aren't really life-changing, they are typically academic. I can give you a better list: Pere Goriot, Balzac Nana, Zola Jude the Obscure, Hardy The Apology, Plato Shakespeare's Henriad; Hamlet; Othello That's ten works in all. For contemporary works, The God of Small Things ANYTHING by Coetzee For more classics, obviously Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, starting with The Death of Ivan Ilych. No one can read these and ever be the same again.

@Emeny Considering Sula and The God of Small Things are by women, I do.

This also shows that no one seriously reads in foreign languages. Remember when every French student read The Little Prince in the original? Check out some pictures of the bookstores in Latin America.

I start near the beginning: The Apology, Gorgias, Symposium. Every one of the philosophers you mention were STEEPED in these three dialogues. Of course, Republic, Sophist, Statesman, and Parmenides are essential as well, but those three are the foundation.

This can't be the explanation. Whole language learning was generally abandoned before the current 18 to 22 year olds were born. And the Harry Potter series was in general use from its beginning in 1991 until well into the 2000s, although the last book came out around 1998. When did kids stop reading that?
