  1. These aren't really life-changing, they are typically academic. I can give you a better list: Pere Goriot, Balzac Nana, Zola Jude the Obscure, Hardy The Apology, Plato Shakespeare's Henriad; Hamlet; Othello That's ten works in all. For contemporary works, The God of Small Things ANYTHING by Coetzee For more classics, obviously Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, starting with The Death of Ivan Ilych. No one can read these and ever be the same again.
